Abstract

This study seeks to explore how the style Arthur Rimbaud developed in the Illuminations was reworked, "systematized," and centralized by Ezra Pound at the turn of the century. Pound's attempt to overthrow the conventions of Genteel poetry and to "Make It New" made him the central figure who bridged the achievements of the nineteenth century precursors of modern American poetry with those of the future generations of poets. Pound's poetics, developed within the "image-ideogram-vortex" framework, owes much to Rimbaldian image that results from the "dereglement de tous les sens." Images thus formed are not used symbolically, neither are they linked to each otlier causally. The poem is viewed as the ground on which separate images or image combinations are brought together without necessarily patterning a whole.
