Abstract

The imitation of style is one of the qualities of the act of writing attributed to a signatory. Depending on the possibility of imitating a modern writer stylistically with the aim of criticism, parody or praise gives birth to the term’ pastiche’ in its modern meaning. Textual imitations were already current practices in the ancient world and still continue to be active today as well. As known, the “In the manner of…”’s are one of the competences of several literary kinds. Imitation is a privileged means of literary teaching and the training in the act of writing. A free creativity and thinking to tackle crucial questions achieved by surpassing the purposes of pedagogy desired to be reached at the beginning. Mimetic training, since the Renaissance, is based on the joint training of rhetoric and ethics by starting out with the old models. These matters are used to form the character of the pupil as well as improving his/her expression. By imitating certain old or modern authors, the pupil is inspired by the values of authors and is nourished by their art. One thus learns how to write by the assiduous frequentation of a limited number of texts considered to be essential. All the forms of imitation are used in this context. One recopies, comments on word for word, and develops a topic, a form, or a passage on the model of the other. The imitation is present on each level of literary teaching. This work, thus, proposes to recall some significant features of the part of the use of imitation in the teaching of writing and literature in various stages of the literary history.
