Abstract
Eugene Ionesco, one of the important playwrights in 20th century theater, deemed innovative or absurd by some, reflects that which is internalized and that which derives from internalization in a fantastic manner in space. Space formulated through this internalization replaces the normal space in which social norms are acceptable and thus provides a fantastic space. Space looses its objective nature and takes on a subjective nature in accordance with the internalization of the characters and thus a fantastic space is created. In other words space displays a parallelism with the psyche of the characters. Internalized reality forms its own space within real space. In plays like The Bald Soprano,The Lesson, The Chairs this is a closed space from which the characters cannot escape, in plays like A Stroll in the Air and The Killer a objective space is abandoned for a spiritual reality. In Exit the King space does not reflect internalization but is the person himself. In Journey Among the Dead , Man with Bags and The Killer space is presented in a complex quality. Space takes on a known and unknown enigmatic aura and becomes a place the characters cannot escape.
