Abstract
Ataç was a very influential critic in Turkish literature between 1921-1957. He was the first to instigate essay as a literary genre in Turkish literature. He was a successful translator who transferred French and Latin Greek classics into Turkish. He was a strong proponent of purification in language. He has greatly influenced many young authors and poets. Though there were many who criticized him, he also had many admirers and followers; and all authors and poets of his time were interested in his works. He also took great pleasure in riling some people.
