Abstract

Ataç, a Turkish writer known for his translations and essays has always pursued a goal : have authors use all genius of Turkish language but also have them avoid words from non Turkish origin (Arabic, Persian, occidental). He even encouraged writers to make up words if need be. Conservatives, stressing that he was no linguist, argued that he had no right to express any opinion about language. His ideas, to be found in articles, essays or in his journal, echo those of modern linguists like Saussure or Martinet, of the translation theorist Vinay or of the 16th century French writer Ronsard.
