Abstract
Latin language and literature in the Hellenistic era culture is an important period for theimprovement of European culture. Turkish intellectuals recognized Latin language and literature inthe 17th century due to scientific studies and politics. We know that Latin language is taught onlyin Kalems or Tercüme Odası in the Tanzimat Era. The first translations of Latin classics were made during era. But these translations were made from French translations of Latin classics instead of from the original language. Until the 1940’s systematic and planned translations of Latin classics were not made in Turkey. After the Faculty of Dil Tarih ve Coğrafya in Ankara University was founded in 1936 and Tercüme Bürosu was established in 1940, translation activity was planned. Numerous books were translated in this Büro. Tercüme Bürosu was closed in 1946 and the number of translations from Latin classics decreased
