Abstract

This speech entitled “Hüseyin Cöntürk, ‘II. Yeni’ Poetry and Atonal Music” was performed duringthe commemoration of Hüseyin Cöntürk (Cöntürk v. Cöntürk) at the TMMOB (Union of Chambersof Engineers and Architects of Turkey) on June 26, 2008. Hüseyin Cöntürk, the unique criticwho introduced the ‘new critical’ approach of Anglo-Saxon descent to replace the impressionistapproach, had already emphasized the possible link between the II. Yeni Poetry and atonal musicin his book Yeni Şiir ve Yeni Müzik (New Poetry and New Music) in 1960. A close observer of developments in readings of criticism, Cöntürk applied Gérard Genette’s ‘hypertexts’ to certain poetry. Hilmi Yavuz too, said that Hüseyin Cöntürk’s atonal or tangible music should be heeded in order for a better understanding of the II. Yeni Poetry. Hüseyin Cöntürk must be studied under the light of Andre Gide’s understanding of ‘dissolution in the moment, with no importance attached either to the past or to future’. Yes, this is how this sterling critic who, as Ataç puts it ‘lives and thinks about literature and poetry 24/7’ needs to be handled
