Abstract

This study entails an analysis of five of the ten pieces in Nathalie Sarraute’s L’usage de la parole (1980). As can be deduced by the title the focal point is the function of discourse. We can see that as with Sarraute’s first work Tropismes , this one also deals with the connotative ability of language and the structural and fictional aspects are formed on the basis of language. The book which is our subject of study the author taking into consideration certain clichés and connotation from daily language studies the affects of these on the readership. Thus the author urges the reader to discover the hidden world behind each word, revealing a world of wonders under each word. The author reflects i his works that the most commonplace utterances used in daily life can attain new meanings and connotations depending on the conditions and the situation in which they are used. The author makes certain inferences that he shares with us. The structural style formulated around the notion of relativity is a feature which makes Sarraute unique. As is the case with many of her works the author instead of presenting her own ideas prefers to urge the readers to consider
