Abstract
Founding images in François Mauriac’s Thérèse Desqueyroux, images that construct the novel’s imagery, bring about two opposing views of the world with not-alike reflections. The conflict that is denied all through the book between the individualism of the author, -who is also the narrator and even one of the characters- Mauriac who is inspired by Catholicism and of Thérèse, the main character who struggles to steer her own life, allows us to consider this book as a transition novel in line with Goldmann’s classification. Yet, we also see that the text in form is close to the new school. On the other hand, the line of thought and the world perspective embraced for form and content are also reminiscent of pre-Balzac novels where they were desolate and forgotten by their creators as Thérèse or as Sartre puts it ‘where they were bereft of autonomy and freedom.’
