Abstract
Among the poems of Les Fleurs du Mal, “Cygne” has a very special place in Baudelaire’s conception of time and memory. The semantic details of the poem show us the way the poet perceives the “eternal present” beyond the notion of time. The essential poetic categories of Baudelaire’s “modernité” help us verify Ricoeur’s assertions in his La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli. In “Cygne” the reader discovers the temporal movement from Antiquity to modernity into a conception and a vision of the world bringing out the essential notion: “Modernité”. The poem opens new doors for sociopolitic and historic interpretations
