Abstract
Georges Perec, well known by his unique literary style, is one of the most unusual writers ofFrench literature. Perec had introduced a great variety of texts that were related to each other withan invisible bond: the influence of his own life. Perec, who expressed that his writing projectstarted at the same time with his autobiographical project, has written his autobiography in variousforms -auto fiction/fiction and autobiography influenced by the writer’s own experiences of lifethroughouthis career as a writer. W or the memory of childhood, which is the subject of this study, seems, among all of his autobiographical texts, to be the first and the only ‘real’ autobiography ofthe writer. W or the memory of childhood separates itself from the classical autobiography style byits unique structure that involves two different texts presented by the way of a parallel progress offiction. While the first story is based on the forgotten memories of Perec and the process of theirre-fictionalisation, the second one is pure fiction at first glance that presents an island named Wgoverned by the rules of the Sport. These two stories complete each other: the fiction helps as atool to express the traumatic reality of the Holocaust, in which Perec lost his family. The discovery of forgotten areas of the past and the re-fictionalisation of past experiences present not only thefunctions of memory but also a path for the affirmation of the self in its existential dilemmas
