Abstract

Marguerite Duras’ work entitled Le Vice-Consul which has been deemed by Richard LaurentOmbga as a ‘humanist approach against exploitation’ and the author herself deemed a representativeof this among Francophone authors, is set in the 1930’s in the then colonized India. Duras, thedaughter of a family who lived in Indo-China knows exactly what colonization and exploitationmean and its problems. These thoughts are portrayed in the works written about Indo-China and Morocco. Though the novel under scrutiny in this paper is essentially a love story the contrary worlds portrayed as a backdrop are riveting. The worlds of the blacks and whites are reflected through certain symbols and imagery. This paper aims to study the contrasting worlds of Anne- Marie Stretter, Peter Morgan, Charles Rosset, Michael Richard the exploiters and the colonists and the downtrodden sick, religious, starving, beggars the exploited
