PROGRESS AND BECOMING IN THE ROAN HORSE OR HUMAN INTENTIONS BY ELSA TRIOLET

Abstract

The Roan Horse or Human Intentions is a science fiction novel by Elsa Triolet (1896-1970), written during the 1950’s , the period of Korean War. The novel describes an event of great violence, the Apocalypse, in other words the end of the world, the collapse of human civilization on Earth, the suffering of man. But on the other hand, the same word which draws “the Deluge of our time” (i.e. the nuclear war), goes farther than the disaster, the catastrophe, the death, the pain and becomes a message of hope, of emancipation of the humanity, of plenitude of its development, of “rediscovered confidence”, of “happiness of the creation”, of “hope to see pushing what we sowed”, to overcome death.
