Abstract
Nedim Gürsel is one of our writers who places space at the center of his works as well as in his own life. The writer left his native city with his family and settled in another provincial city; his years spent as a boarder at Galatasaray High School introduced him to the big city. Thus, the journey from one city to other cities begins at a young age. All the cities included in his life have a significant share in the formation of his literary life. Gursel, who has left half a hundred years behind since the year he published his first story; gezi yazılı is a writer whose identity as a storyteller and novelist is at the forefront, although he continues to give works in genres such as essays, autobiographies, and reviews. Not content with depicting the cities he has chosen as a place for his novels, the author makes them an important part of the novel. The artistic structure of the city, the change in history, the elements it contains, the traces it bears from social and political events and the modernization efforts made in order to keep up with the economic change are often encountered. Another important theme of Kentin Gursel is his narrative intertwined with women, which allows us to see him as a character on a fictional plane. Kent, which is one of the main themes in all his works, has ceased to be a backdrop in his works, and sometimes he has even taken on the role of the main hero or character. A prolific writer, Gursel combined the concept of the city with his impressions of the fields of history, geography, art and politics in all six of his novels and processed them in a fictional field including autobiographical elements. Some of the novels go back and forth between the fictional one and the real one with the deconstruction and presentation of the character, and some of them can be interpreted from an orientalist point of view. Especially in novels where he uses postmodern techniques and uses a new historicist approach, his city acts as a character that has an important role in the progress of the work, other than being a space and beyond, is a different approach for Turkish literature; thus, space will now be used in another dimension and function. In this study, Gürsel's six novels written in twenty-five years, “Boğazkesen” (1995), “Illustrated World” (2000), “Daughters of Allah” (2008), “Satan, Angel and Communist” (2011), “Captain's Son” (2014) and “Love and Rebellion” (2020), which have made the concept of the city a character and using it as an element of the narrative in his six novels, will be examined in subheadings by linking them with other themes.
