Abstract

Since ancient times, people have primarily struggled to survive. For this purpose, they have made productions to meet their shelter, nutrition and clothing needs with the materials they have obtained from their environment and have been in continuous development. In this context, the need for dressing, which initially emerged to protect itself from adverse climatic conditions, has taken on different functions over time with social developments. Societies living in different climates and geographies and having different lifestyles, beliefs and understandings of life have also differed from each other. Thus, the concept of clothing has formed an important part of the cultural accumulation of societies by being shaped according to gender, age, economic and social situation, environmental factors, beliefs, ethnic identity, geographical location, climatic conditions, social status and the requirements of the time lived. Clothing in the Anatolian geography, which has a rich clothing culture, can be examined under three main headings as those worn on the head, body and feet. Jewelry and accessories, which are the complementary elements of clothing and formed around the understanding of clothing, appear as an important element of this richness. Şanlıurfa is one of our ancient cities that has been home to many civilizations in the past. Due to the coexistence of many cultural accumulations, there is also diversity in the field of traditional handicrafts. One of the traditional handicrafts is Kazazlık craft, which has been widely practiced in the past years, but is about to disappear by losing its old value and functionality today. The person who turns raw silk into yarn is called kazaz, the craft that processes and sells silk is called kazaz. Migration from the village to the city, the change in lifestyles, industrialization and the development of technology, increasing diversity and mass production in meeting the needs also negatively affected the traditional handicrafts, which are tried to be continued with limited production in the workshop environment. On the other hand, as a result of the acceleration of the communication network, the increasing influence of the internet and the media, the concept of fashion, which is formed by the increasing effects of global capital companies in the world markets, affects the societies more and more. In this study, the historical process and production techniques of the Kazaz art made with silk, various threads and wires in Şanlıurfa will be examined. For this purpose, written and virtual resources were scanned and fieldwork was carried out. During the fieldwork, interviews and observations were made with traditional kazaz masters. The conditions of change and development in the historical process and the state of the art of Kazazism from the past to the present have been examined and its current state has been evaluated.
