Abstract
In this article, it is emphasized that the methods and approaches to “text publication”, which are mostly within the scope of Divan Literature (Old Turkish Literature) studies, can also be used in determining the folk song texts within the scope of Turkish Folk Literature studies. In this framework, first of all, the terminology and basic principles of “text publication” studies have been discussed with the main lines. Of these, in particular, the concepts of “copy”, “author’s copy”, “scribal’s copy”, “text repair” and “text editing” were focused on. Of course, this was done by taking into account the opinions of the main experts in the Old Turkish Literature discipline. Then, it has been discussed how the methods and approaches related to the concepts in question can be applied in the determination of folk song texts in Turkish Folk Literature studies. However, the main thing at issue here is not the transfer of folk song texts from sources containing Arabic letters to Latin letters. The main issue is the effort to correctly identify the texts of the folk songs produced by minstrels (ashik/âşık), especially in the recent period. In this sense, it is possible to evaluate the variants of a folk song in different sources (written in Arabic or Latin letters, manuscript or printed, audio or video recording) as a “copy”. The texts of the folk songs of the minstrels are usually put down on paper and prepared for publication by other people, not themselves. In addition, other singers can perform the folk songs of minstrels. For this reason, the texts in these records, which bear the traces of other people, should be accepted as “scribal’s copy”. If there is an audio or video recording of the minstrel’s performance of the folk song in question, the text in this recording should be considered as the “author’s copy”. This recording should be taken as a basis for determining the folk song’s text. If there is no such record, the existing texts of the folk song should be compared according to the principles of text publication. In this comparison, the differences should be emphasized, possible inaccuracies should be detected, and the text should be repaired duly when necessary. Thus, both the original text revealed by the minstrel and the variants of this text will be determined. This, in turn, will allow both to understand the text correctly and to make consistent assessments of the process of variationization of the folk song. In the light of these evaluations, in the next part of the study, the folk song “Spring Wind Blowed and Snow Melted (Esti Bahar Yeli Karlar Eridi)” by Ashik Veysel was discussed according to the principles of text publication. The texts of the folk song from 12 different sources were compared, the mistakes in these texts were determined under the guidance of the minstrel’s audio recordings and their correct forms were conveyed. In the conclusion part of the study, it was emphasized how and why the principles of text publication should be used in the determination of folk song texts. Then, the problems caused by the inaccuracies related to this folk song of Ashik Veysel were evaluated.
