Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the cardiovascular the responses obtained in the isometric exercise in the obese and nonobese subjects. Material and Method: Thirty normotensive subject participated in this study. Sixteen of them were obese and fourteen were nonobese. They were matched for age and hight. In all subjects, body composition (percent of fat, water and lean body mass), skinfold thicknesses (biceps, triceps, subscapularis, suprailiac), waist and hip circumferences, maximal (max) hand grip strength and blood lipids were measured. Isometric handgrip exercise test was applied in the level of 50% of the max handgrip strength for 3 minutes. The blood pressures were measured and the electrocardiogrames were reported at rest, during and after the isometric test. Results: The obese subjects had the higher percent of fat, skinfold thicknesses, triglyceride, rest and max sistolic and diastolic blood pressures and the lower lean body mass, percent of water and high-density lipoproten cholesterol (HDL-C) (p0.05). The differences between the rest and max diastolic and sistolic blood pressures were similar in both groups (p>0.05). Discussion: Finally, we think that isometric exercise test, could apply to evaluate cardiovascular functions in the normotensive obese subjects, but further investigations are necessary to assess the responses correctly.
