Abstract

Purpose: This study was undertaken with the aim of investigating the efficacy of physiotherapy in the i treatment of congenital pes equinovarus. Material and Method: The study was carried out on 42 feet of 29 children referred to the Orthotics Unit of the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Hacettepe University. The mean age of the children was 10.58±5.10 months. The children were allocated to either the intensive physiotherapy or home program groups according to sample of convenience. Four of the patients were given a below knee, the rest an above knee mold holding the affected feet in the corrected position. Children in both groups were assessed four times by the talocalcaneal and talus /'" metatarsal angles, feet length, calf circumference and goniometric measurements. The childrenin the study group received physiotherapy for 20 sessions consisting of local heat, stretch and mobilisation exercises and High Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) to the peroneal muscles. Results: Statistical analysis showed that there was on going and favourable decrease in all three components of the deformity in both groups and that this difference was . significant in favour of the study group (p
