Abstract
Purpose: This study was carried out with the aim of comparing the strengthening and pain perception effects of different neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) methods and exercise on the quadriceps femoris muscle. Material and Methods: Eighty healthy subjects were randomly allocated to four groups. Each group consisted of twenty subjects (10 female, 10 male). The quadriceps femoris muscle was strengthened using either Faradic, Russian, High Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) current or isometric exercise. The subjects were trained ten minutes each day, for five days a week, for three consecutive weeks. In both extremities the quadriceps femoris muscle strength, pain perception (Visual Analog Scale -VAS-) and current intensity toleration were assessed before and after the training period. Results: In all four groups, an increase of strength in the quadriceps femoris was found (p0.05). Amongst the NMES groups, the lowest VAS and the highest current intensity toleration values were found in the HVPGS group (p(0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that HVPGS was more advantageous in terms of muscle strengthening, low pain perception and high current intensity toleration amongst the NMES techniques.
