Abstract

It is well known that patients with pesplanus sometimes complain of low back pain and that bilateral hyperpronation of the feet may lead to increase in lumbar lordosis. Pes planus is nearly always associated with some degree of pronation of the foot. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between foot pronation in pesplanus and the lordotic angles in adolescent posture. 30 students in early adolescence clinically diagnosed as pesplanus were taken to laboratory investigation in hospital. They were compared to a control group including the same number of adolescents. The socioeconomic levels of the students in both groups varied and they studied in two different secondary schools. There was no difference in regard to age, sex and body mass index (BMI) between the two groups. The type of the medial longitudinal arch (MIA) configuration of the feet of the adolescents f rom the two groups was determined by use of the lateral talometatarsal angle (LTMA) values measured on weight-bearing lateral foot X-rays. Pronation of the feet of the 20 adolescents with bilateral pesplanus and of the feet of the 19 adolescents from the control group who had bilaterally normal feet according to the LTMA evaluation was determined using talocalcaneal angles measured on weight-bearing anteroposterior and lateral foot X-rays (APTCA andLTCA). Lumbosacral and sacrohorizontal angles (LSAs and SHAs) of the adolescents were evaluated from lateral lumbosacral X-rays. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean LTCA values of the groups (p
