Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of intermittent cyclic etidronat treatment in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients. For this purpose, we studied 60 patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis whose diagnosis were established by clinic, laboratory and bone den-sitometrical measurements. We randomized the patients into three groups. The patients in the first group were given oral etidronat (400mg/day)for two weeks, followed by oral Ca (500mg/day) and vit D (400 IU/day)for 12 weeks. The second group was given only oral etidronat and the third group was given oral Ca and vit D. We excluded 15 patients from the study because of side effects, taking the pills irregularly or who had a weight gain or loss by %10 of the baseline during therapy. Fourty-five patients were taken into account after twelve months. The changes in the serum ALP, Ca, P and urinary Ca/Cr ratio values before and after the treatment in all three groups were not statistically significant. We found that, in the first and second gmup who were given etidronat, the bone mineral densities increased significantly. But, in the first group who took Ca and vit D combined with etidronat, the imminent was statistically more sensible. In the third group who took only Ca and vit D, there was no increament. As a result, in postmenopausal osteoporosis, etidronat treatment is effective, especially when combined with Ca and vit D.
