Abstract

In this study, rabies cases were investigated in animals within cities of East and Southeast Anatolia region between 2004-2009 years. During the study period, specimens from the East and Southeast Anatolia of Turkey, suspected of having rabies submitted to viral diagnostic laboratory of Veterinary Control Institute were totally 384 samples which 358 of them belonging domestic animal rabies (93.23%) and 26 (6.77%) of them belonging wild animal rabies. Specimens taken from domestic animals were found 59.49% rabies positive (213/358) and specimens belonging to wild animals were found 80.7% rabies positive (21/26) following laboratory examination. According to city based results, in Diyarbakır, 75 (75 positive of 94 samples - 79.78%); Elazığ, 41 (41 positive of 47 samples - 47.12%); Malatya, 25 (25 positive of 49 samples - 51.02%); Mardin, 23 (23 positive of 34 samples - 67.64%); Van, 15 (15 positive of 23 samples - 65.21%); Tunceli, 10 (10 positive of 17 samples - 58.82%); Hakkâri, 9 (9 positive of 17 samples - 52.94%); Bingöl, 9 (9 positive of 15 samples - 60%); Muş, 9 (9 positive of 18 samples - 50%); Şırnak, 6 (6 positive of 9 samples - 66.66%); Bitlis, 5 (5 positive of 8 samples - 62.50%); Siirt, 2 (2 positive of 7 samples - 28.57%) and Batman, 2 (2 positive of 6 samples - 33.33%) rabies diseases focal points have been determined. According to laboratory test results regarding rabies, maximal affected animal species were dog (110/231- 47.61%), cattle (57/231- 24.67%) and cat (16/231-6.92%). As a result, dog rabies is common in this region. Infected dogs transmit the virus to cattle, cat and other species. So dog rabies is important in rabies disease epidemiology.
