Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of prejudice against obese individuals and the affecting factors by the students studying at the faculty of health sciences. Materials and Methods: The population of this cross-sectional study consists of all first and third year students (N=640) studying in the health sciences faculty of Fırat University. Personal information form and GAMS-27 obesity bias scale were used as data collection tools. SPSS 22.0 package program was used in the analysis of the data. Results: 84.2% of the participants were women and 52.3% were nursing students. The median BMI of the students was determined as 21.38 (19.54-23.49) kg/m². A total of 16.7% of the students in the research group were found to be unbiased, 61.0% biased and 22.3% prejudiced against obese individuals. It was observed that the prejudices of the nursing department students, those who do not have obese people in their close circle, those who regularly do sports, and those who stated that they were unbiased, were higher than the other groups. The total scores of the GAMS- 27 obesity bias scale of the students evaluated in the research group do not differ according to gender, age group and class status. Conclusion: The frequency of prejudice and prejudice tendency towards obesity is high in students. Multidisciplinary studies should be conducted to increase awareness and level of consciousness towards reducing obesity prejudices in students who are future health workers
