Abstract

Just as Foucault problematizes the notions of enlightenment and critique, so he problematizes the notion of intellectual similarly. In doing this, he primarily objects to the notion of universal intellectual who has been very common in western thought for a long time, and then claims that we need a new type of intellectual -what he called specific intelectual- in the new social conditions after the modernity. In order to be able to be seen his objection and claim completely, this paper, firstly, examines the reasons why he objects to the notion of universal intellectual, why he prefers the specific intellectual to the universal intellectual, and the needs which specific intellectual meets but universal intellectual does not. The paper secondly attempts to find the answers of such questions like what are the conditions that enable specific intellectual?, what is the role of the specific intellectual?, what are its properties, models and virtues? in Foucault’s thought; and finally in the conclusion section, it pays attention to the possibility that the notion of specific intellectual itself can be problematized in one way through indicating some problems which specific intellectuals have to face.
