Abstract

Michel Foucault devotes the ninth and tenth chapters of Words and Things to human and human sciences. According to him, since human beings did not appear until the beginning of the 19th century, scientific discourses about life, work and speech, which are the three main features of human beings, emerge with human existence. While in the 17th and 18th centuries for which he calls the classical era, the three sciences related to these three fields are named as natural history, wealth analysis and general grammar. In he 19th century which is the beginning of modern era, these are called biology, economic policy and philology. In the field of social sciences, which began to be established with the transition from the classical period to the Modern period, two concepts emerged which could be put opposite each other in order to form the knowledge of these fields: Positivism, as in natural sciences, collects objective data and collects these data and aims to analyze them by methods of natural sciences. Humanism avoids the pursuit of so-called objective data collection and adopts the inherent subjectivity of the social sciences. After saying that from the 19th century, can be rewritten through these three models Foucault notes that these three models also cover the entire formation of human sciences history, since it is possible to monitor the sovereignty of their privileges for more than a century.
