Özet

Adam Ferguson, toplumsal ilerlemenin siyasi ve felsefi soruşturmaya konu olduğu bir dönemde ilerleme düşüncesi üzerinden toplum ve ahlak felsefesini inşa eden İskoç Aydınlanmasının önemli figürlerinden biridir. An Essay on the History of Civil Society isimli eserinde doğal tarih kuramı çerçevesinde insanoğlunun ilkel toplumlardan uygar toplumlara ilerleyişinin toplumsal, ahlaki ve siyasi boyutlarını tartışır. Ferguson ayrıca Institutes of Moral Philosophy ve Principles of Moral and Political Science isimli eserlerindeinsan türünün ve bireyin tarihini, insan doğasını, ahlaki yargıyı, ahlaki onamayı, erdemli ve mutlu bir hayatın özelliklerini derinlemesine inceler. Bu çalışmanın amacı Ferguson’un, insanın gelişimini ve toplumun ilerlemesinin tarihini kapsayan taslak üzerinden, ahlak felsefesini nasıl konumlandırdığını ve insanın doğal toplumsallığı ile ahlak kuramını nasıl ilişkilendirdiğini göstermektir. Bu bağlamda onun toplum ve ahlak felsefesinin temelleri analiz edilirken hem toplumun bir bireyi olarak hem de ahlaki bir fail olarak insanın yeri, ödevi ve hayatının amacı tartışılacaktır. Ayrıca doğal toplumsallık konusunda Ferguson’un dönemin diğer düşünürlerinden ayrıldığı nokta belirlenip bunun toplumun mutluluğuna ve bireyin ahlaki formasyonuna etkisi üzerinde durulacaktır.

Abstract

Adam Ferguson is one of the key figures of the Scottish Enlightenmentwho built his social and moral philosophy through the idea of progress at atime when social progress was the subject of political and philosophicalinquiries. He discusses social, moral and political aspects of the progress ofmankind from rude nations to civilized ones within the frame of naturalhistory in An Essay on the History of Civil Society. Ferguson also thoroughlyexamines the history of human species and individual, human nature, moraljudgment, moral approbation, characteristics of a virtuous and happy life inInstitutes of Moral Philosophy and Principles of Moral and Political Science. The aimof this study is to demonstrate how Ferguson locates his moral philosophythrough the design embracing the improvement of individual and theprogress of society and how he identifies natural sociability of mankind withhis theory of morals. In this regard, while analyzing the basics of his socialand moral philosophy, the place and the duty of human being as anindividual of society as well as a moral agent and the purpose of life will bediscussed. The distinctive aspect of Ferguson’s outlook on naturalsociability from other thinkers of the era and its effect on the happiness ofsociety and the moral formation of individual will also be elaborated.
