Abstract

This study aims to examine importance and value of the syllogism in the Westerner philosophers. The philosophers have assertioned three criticism against the syllogism; first doesn't need to the syllogism, second it's petitio principii and third it's incomplete and must be developed. First two criticism are negative while third is positive. Method of inference in the syllogism and scientific discoveries demonstrate that the first two criticism invalid. As for third, Leibniz studied logic to save the syllogism from incomplate and set up a new symbolic logic and a universal scientific method. These studies contributed to developing and establishing symbolic logic that founded by Russel and Whieated afterward.
