Özet
Conclusion: In obese individuals, LAGB helps APG and API values to approach normal, remission in the major form of type 2 DM and minimizing life-threatening complications, besides decreases in weight and BMI.
Abstract
Aim: Obesity, since it is associated with diseases involving various organ systems, reduces quality of life of people and leads to a significant increase in morbidity and mortality. Metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia, insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) are often seen together with morbid obesity (MO). In this study, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting plasma insulin (FPI) and IR values in relationship to the change in weight was investigated in morbidly obese patients with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Materials and Methods: Seventy-six patients who underwent LAGB between September 2006 - February 2010 in Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital 6th surgery clinic because of morbid obesity were included in the study. Weight, FPG, FPI, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) values of patients were measured both preoperatively and on the postoperative 6thmonth. Body mass index (BMI), HOMA (Homeostasis Model Assessment) and QUICKI (Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index) were calculated. Preoperative measurements and index values were compared with the values of postoperative sixth month. Results: Postoperative sixth monthly weight, BMI, FPG, FPI values and the values calculated using the HOMA and QUICKI indices for all patients, were found to be significantly lower than the preoperative values (p 0.05). Conclusion: In obese individuals, LAGB helps APG and API values to approach normal, remission in the major form of type 2 DM and minimizing life-threatening complications, besides decreases in weight and BMI.
