Abstract
The aim of the present study was to find out the influence of cadmium on Na+, K+, Ca++ and Mg++ levels in serum of Tilapia nilotica. Cadmium effected serum Na+, K+, Ca++ and Mg++ ion levels. Cadmium caused an increase in the sodium level and a decrease in the potassium level in the serum. This might be due to a change in the $Na^+/K^+-$ ATPase activity and intercellular and intracellular distribution of sodium and potassium under the effect of cadmium. Serum calcium level showed a decrease, possibly due to inhibition of calcium transport by cadmium at the gill tissue chloride cells. Cadmium caused an increase in serum magnesium level in contrast to the calcium level. The decrease in serum calcium level might also affect the magnesium level indirectly.
