Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge about breast feeding and breast feeding practices in urban, rural and shanty areas in Manisa region. Mothers followed up at Celal Bayar Hospital Faculty Well Child Care Outpatient Service and in Muradiye and Nurlupınar Health Care Centers were included in the study. Questionnaire about knowledge and practice of breastfeeding was applied to all mothers. Mothers included in this study aged between 17-42 years. It was detected that breastfeeding is more frequent upon baby's demand in rural and shanty areas, and in every 2-3 hours in urban areas (p=0.00). Nocturnal breastfeeding longer than 6 months was more frequent in rural and shanty areas when compared to the urban areas (61.6% and 75% vs 50% respectively, p=0.001). Unoccupied mothers breastfed upon baby's demand more frequently (p= 0.001). Total duration of breastfeeding was not significantly different among the groups. Duration of exclusive breastfeeding was more than 4 months in 76.2% of the mothers. Weaning was initiated at 5-6 month-age by 42.3% of the mothers. Of the mothers from urban, rural and shanty areas, 79%, 75.6% and 86.8% respectively, stated that duration of breastfeeding should be 4-8 months. It was found that breastfeeding was continued along with other foods for longer than 9 months in 78.5% of the mothers in our region. Breastfeeding practices, except frequency of breastfeeding and duration of nocturnal breastfeeding, were similar between urban, rural and shanty areas in our region.
