Abstract
Although reactive thrombocytosis is a frequent condition in childhood infectious diseases, it is especially frequent in patients with lower respiratory tract infections. In this study, we aimed to search the incidence of thrombocytosis in patients hospitalized with pneumonia. This study has been performed on 150 lower tract infection cases aged between 1-10 years-old. Platelet counts of children who had lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and empyema, lobar pneumonia, and viral pneumonia, were investigated. Thrombocytosis were dptermined to be 84%, 44% and 22% in patients with pneumonia and empyema, lobar pneumonia and viral pneumonia, respectively. The mean of peak platelet counts were significantly higher in the pneumonia and empyema group (780.760±284.564/mm3). There was statistically no significant difference of age and sex among the 3 groups. In conclusion, reactive thrombocytosis was seen more frequently in bacterial infections than viral infections,
