Abstract
In this article, fifteen medallion-ornamentedmanuscripts prepared for the library of Murad III, whowas known for his interest in books and illustratedmanuscripts, were examined. While Murad III was thesanjak chief in Manisa, many books were presented to himand after his accession to the throne, he encouraged thepreparation of books with illustrations whether writtenoriginally in Ottoman-Turkish or translated from otherlanguages. The expressions such as ʻhizâne, bi-resm, li resmʼ were used within the medallion-ornament in themanuscripts presented to the sultan, who had a library fullof illustrated books. The medallion-ornamentedmanuscripts mentioned in the article belong to manydifferent fields such as history, geography, hadith, sirah, astrology, ethics, sufism and fine arts. While ten of thebooks in question are illustrated, there are no illustrationsin five of them. Unlike the others, Mehmed Suûdî's workcalled Metâli‘ü’s-Sa‘âde was prepared for the sultan'sdaughters Fatima and Ayşe Sultan. All of the works, except Ibretname by Lâmiî Çelebi, either were written orwere translated during the reign of Murad III. It is knownthat Seyyid Lokman, Muhyî-i Gülşenî, Mehmed Suûdîand Cenâbî Mustafa received a certain amount of grantsafter having presented their works to the sultan. This shows that the medallion-ornament is used not only for thelibrary but also for the patronage tradition. The fact thatmost of the medallion-ornamented books are in Turkish isan indication of the importance that the sultan gave toTurkish language. In the article, it is claimed thatmedallion-ornament in manuscripts was used for differentpurposes and the medallion-ornamented manuscripts inthe sultan's library were listed along with the notes onMurad's library and the works with medallions. Theimages of the medallions and the Turkish translations ofthe texts within the medallions are also included.
