Abstract

Ancyra, the capital city of the Provincia Galatia of the Roman Empire, has been one of the important cities of the region since 25 BC. Based on a numerous amount of studies on the city of Ancyra, it is possible to acquire knowledge regarding the structural, social and political evolution of the city. A great majority of this knowledge is gathered through the salvage excavations and surveys performed by the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The most signicant change experienced in the region, that had entered the domination of Rome in 25 BC when Emperor Augustus established the province of Galatia, was the replacement of the castle settlements (phrourion) of Galatian Rulers with a planned urban texture reecting the Roman culture and road network systems connecting the cities. The Galatia Province was organized under three polis divisions by Emperor Augustus being paralel to the tribe based divisions of the past periods. Pessinus was belonging to Tolitobogii, Ancyra was belonging Tektosagii, and Tavium was belonging to Trokmii tribes. Ancyra became the capital of the Province of Galatia and many monumental constructions, which can be dened as the propaganda structures of the Roman Empire, such as a theatre, a stadium, a nympheum, and a temple, began to be built in the city. While such a Romanization process was being carried out in the capital, new colonial cities such as “Colonia Germa” and “Kinna” were established in the countryside, where Roman veterans were accommodated; thus, the Romanization of the region was ensured. Thanks to the archaeological nds on which we can testify the continuity of life in the Hellenistic villages/towns and castles in the vicinity of Ancyra. This study includes a general evaluation of the previous researches made around Ankyra and the current survey conducted by myself. A general outline of the Roman Ankyra was visualized by placing all the archaeological nds on the attached map. Information such as the territorial diffusions and structural features of these districts can only be understood through detailed excavations and surface surveys to be carried out in the future.
