Abstract

The present study focuses on thirty two terracotta lamps, which are decorated with figurative and floral ornamentations, symbols and stamps, from the forty three pieces of terracotta lamps, which were purchased for the archaeological artifacts collection of Silifke Museum. Floral ornamentations on the terracotta lamps comprise a large portion of decorations. In addition, mythological scenes, gladiatorial struggle, chariot racing, figurative decorations including animal and hunting scenes, symbols (Greek cross) and foot stamp printing (Planta pedis) are also seen. The decorations on the studied terracotta lamps mostly cover the discus and shoulder areas. At the same time, ornaments and stamps can be found around discus and under the base of terracotta lamps. Having presented an iconographic and iconological interpretation of the ornaments, symbols and stamps on the terracotta lamps in Silifke Museum, the present study also intends to make a contribution to the past and future studies by interpreting the possible meanings of and the reasons for the decorations on the examined terracotta lamps.
