Abstract
As in many other societies, in the old Arab society, people would give gifts to show their love, joy and appreciation. Sometimes they would give gifts to keep away from trouble, to attract one person, to destroy a person’s anger or to request something from a person. The subject of the gift took its place in classical Arabic literature sources as a motif from such angles The words that are given when giving a gift, the nature of the gifted objects, the attitudes of the people receiving and giving gifts. One of these sources is Ibn Hamdûn’s at-Tazkiratu’l-Hamdûniyye, a literary, poet and historian who lived in the sixth century of hijri. This book, which is quite voluminous, is a source of classical Arabic literature that resembles an encyclopedia which includes many subjects such as politics, morality, jokes, poems, oratinons and proverbs. The work also brought together many narratives from prose and poetry related to the gift tradition. In this study, the phenomenon of gifts in Arabic culture and literature will be investigated to the extent that it is reflected in said literary source.
