Abstract

Perinatal asphyxia is one of the important causes of mortality and neurological morbidity in newborns. This study was performed to detect the importance of plasma hypoxanthine levels as a biochemical parameter in the diagnosis and prognosis of perinatal asphyxia. Fourty-one full-term newborns with asphyxia and 30 healthy full-terms as a control group were included in the study. The plasma hypoxanthine levels (PHL) from peripheral venous blood of zero to six hours were assayed by enzymatic and spectrophbtometric methods. The mean PHL of newborns with asphyxia was207.96±115.48 $mu$mol/L and that of normal infants was 67.23±57.42 $mu$mol/L (p
