Abstract
Portland blast-furnace cement (PBFC) is a combination of slag and portland cement. According to some specifications, PBFC is ground as fine as ordinary portland cement (OPC). It is well known that if the portland cement clinker and slag are ground together, the clinker being softer, is ground finer than the slag. In this work, however, the port-land cement and slag components were separately ground; GGBS (Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag) was ground to five finenesses and blended with OPC. Since GGBS has both the pozzolanic and microfiller effects, the influence of the fineness of GGBS on the interface between cement paste and aggregate, is investigated under compression. A normal OPC concrete and five PBFC concretes were made with a constant water/binder ratio and similar type aggregates. In each PBFC concrete, the GGBS was 25 percent by weight of cement. The experimental results show that there is a good linear correlation between the Blaine fineness of GGBS and strengths of concrete; when the fineness of GGBS increases, the interfacial zone between aggregate and cement paste becomes stronger, as a result both compressive strength and cylinder splitting strength increase.
