Abstract
In this study, the resistance to high temperature of mortars prepared from different cement types were investigated. Five commercial cements i.e., CEM I 32.5, CEM IIB/P 32.5, CEM IIA/P 32.5, CEM IIA/W 32.5 and SDÇ 32.5 were studied. Mortars prepared from above mentioned cements and one type of river sand were cast into 40x40x160 mm prismatic molds. The specimens were either cured in air at 20 °C or in water at 23 °C. High temperature was applied to the specimens at 7th and 28th days after casting. In addition to control mixtures, two series of mixtures each consisting of three specimens were subjected to 300 °C and 600 °C for 3 hours. At the end of heating period, the specimens were allowed to cool for 2 hours in room temperature before determining their compressive and flexural strength values. Regardless of the type of cement, curing regime and curing period, exposure to 300 °C had not a significant effect on the residual compressive strength of the mortar. However, exposure to 600 °C decreased the residual compressive strength by 60-80%. The relative residual flexural strength of all of the mixtures was decreased upon exposure to either 300 or 600 °C. The effect was more pronounced at 600 °C. The beneficial effect of water curing on the mixtures containing large amounts of mineral admixtures seems to be superior to the detrimental effect of vapor pressure caused by high temperatures in the saturated specimens.
