Abstract

In this study, the efficiency of stabilization/solidification (S/S) technology for the treatment of steel foundry bag house dusts was investigated. Mortar samples were prepared by mixing 5, 10, 15, and 20 % of waste dust by weight with Portland cement and water-to- solids ratio was chosen as 0.4 in terms of workability. Fly ash, cement kiln dust and rust scale powder, which is a process waste of the steel foundry, were used as additives along with Portland cement. Unconfined Compressive Strength and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) extraction tests were performed. Leachable Pb and Zn concentrations were measured and removal efficiencies were determined with the samples that had been cured in water for 7, 28,56, 90, 120 and 180 days. A decrease in compressive strength and an increase in leachable Zn and Pb concentrations with increasing levels of waste dusts in mortars were observed. With 5% and 20% of waste addition, the removal efficiencies obtained for Zn were 99% and 90%, and for Pb were 100% and 94%, respectively. The leachable Pb level when 5% öf waste dust had been stabilized with cement, conformed with the landfilling criteria of the Turkish Hazardous Waste Control Regulations and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA); however the leachable Zn level did not conform with the landfilling criteria. The Zn and Pb removal efficiencies using fly ash, cement kiln dust and rust scale powder were lower than that of Portland cement. The most effective stabilization of steel foundry bag house dust was obtained with the Portland cement.
