Abstract

Identity is a structure that creates a definition area for itself, moving fromthe individual to society. In this structure, every individual who needs to identifythe I , is also obliged to mention the we . Therefore, a completely independentdefinition of the self is impossible. The self only attains its true meaning within a collective structure, which makes it possible to exist. That collective structureis comprised of such elements as language, history, geography and religion, allof which can be termed as common identification values . Societies intertwinedthrough these elements can only become nations.Çanakkale , a poem by Ziya Gökalp, focuses mainly on how a nation re-stores itself from a state of collapse through attacks made upon its conception ofself. A nation, comprehending the importance and true nature of its own self ,begins to reshape its identity for the future. In this study, Çanakkale , a poem byZiya Gökalp focusing on the conception of the self and identity, will be analysedin terms of how the Turkish nation managed to reshape its destiny and identity.
