Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic, persistent bacterial infection which is characterized by abscess and consequent fistula formation. Presentation of a patient with cervical actinomycosis is intended. A 52 years old male patient has admitted with a ten years history of a fluctuant mass on anterior cervical triangle of his neck. As a result of the radiological examinations, the mass was diagnosed as an abscess and immediate surgical drainage was applied. It was observed that abscess content was of small yellow granules. Although the klebsiella was detected in abscess culture microbiologically, the diagnosis was confirmed through the histopathological examination. The patient has responded well to long-term penicillin treatment and the lesion disappeared completely. This successful respond to penicillin treatment also supported the diagnosis. It is concluded that the detection of sulfur granules within the abscess cavity may confirm the diagnosis ofactinomycosis, and the disease may be taken under control by high-dose penicillin treatment even the complications develop.
