Abstract

Pregnancy was used to be accepted as an absolute contraindication for laparoscopic surgery in its first years. But today minimal invasive surgery is performed in pregnancy on behalf of the developments in laparoscopy. Nevertheless the effects of increased intraabdominal pressure, acidosis and hypercarbia on fetal development are not clear. In this experimental study, the effect of carbondioxide pneumoperitoneum on fetal growth in rats was studied. 14 female Sprague-Dawley rats were put in to separate cages with male rats for reproduction. The following day vaginal smear was performed and rats contaminated with sperm were accepted to be pregnant and the day of diagnosis was accepted to be the day 0. The rats were separated in two groups with equal number of animals at the end of the sixth day. Carbondioxide pneumoperitoneum was created for 30 minutes at 8 mmHg pressure in the rats in Group I. Group II sham was used as control. On the 20th day caeserian section were performed and the number of fetuses and placentas, morphological appearance, the weights of fetuses and placentas, fetus head -tail and tail lengths were noted. Student's t and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in statistical analysis. Fetus weight, head-tail and tail lengths were lower in insufflation group (p
