Abstract

Objective: Progression and interaction of factors that cause fatigue have not been fully uncovered despite highly developed measurement technologies. Non-invasive monitoring of fatigue causing factors and in this way development of methods for giving feedback to the athletes lies ahead of us as the main goal. We have tried to obtain more information about working muscles and fatigue mechanisms.Method: Simultaneous near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and surface electromyography (SEMG) measurements were recorded during local exercises. The NIRS signals are proportional to concentration changes of deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) and oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) while SEMG contains the surface sum of motor units’ action potentials. Signals recorded during isometric and dynamic exercises of limb muscles biceps brachii, flexor digitorum superficialis, vastus lateralis have been investigated. Results: Mean (MNF) and Median Frequency (MDF) parameters computed from SEMG were found to decline concomitant with Hb increase and HbO2 decrease during the exercise. Hb and HbO2 changes were fast at the start of the exercise, whereas these rates slow down afterwards the fast phase. Magnitudes of MNF, MDF decrease slopes and fast phase rates of Hb increase/HbO2 decrease become greater as the contraction force increases. Conclusion: SEMG and NIRS measurements give information about local muscle metabolism changes during exercise each being sensitive to different changes.
