Abstract
The white bentonite which consists of montmorillonite as the dominant clay mineral and relatively large quantity of cristobalite as the non-clay mineral was supplied by MTA from the Ünye/Ordu region. The bentonite has been activated by the dry process with sulfuric acid at various acid ratios from 10 % to 60 % in acid and clay mixture. The changes in physicochemical properties of the bentonite with the sulfuric acid activation were examined. The X-ray difraction, chemical compositions, cation exchange capacities, specific surface area and pH measurements were determined for original and activated samples. The variations in specific surface area and cation exchance capacities were discussed with respect to the $R_2O_3 (Al_2O_3 + Sigma Fe_2O_3)$ and total metal oxide percentages remaining in the samples after activation. While acid ratio increased the cation exchange capacities decrased with acid activation. The specific surface area has been observed to reach maximum when the percentage of sulfuric acid in the activation is 40 %.
