Abstract
Objectives: The oral cavity is subjected tothermal irritation from hot and cold foods andbeverages. Thermal irritation in the oral cavityproduces expansions and contractions inrestorative materials. This study investigates that, the effect of thermal stress and temperaturedistribution when 65 C° thermal load was appliedon glass fiber reinforced composite resin post andzirconia post in right maxillary canine by threedimensional finite element method.Materials and Methods: Right maxillarycanine, full ceramic crown, composite corematerial, luting agent, post materials, the ledge forferrule effect, gutta percha, compact andspongious bone that surround the tooth weremodeled for the thermal stress analysis. 65 C°thermal load was applied on the model for 5 secs.Temperature and thermal stresses weredetermined on the bucco lingual section of themodel on 7 points. Besides, max. thermal stresseson the nodes and their values were determined. Results: Zirconia post systems produced moretemperature and thermal stresses on therestorative materials, tooth structures and poststhan glass fiber reinforced composite resin posts.Thermal stresses were much more between thelayers of restorative materials, on the luting agentand cervical region. Thermal stresses weredetermined near the cervical region of the modelon root dentin, compact and spongious boneregions and no stresses were determined on themiddle and apical third of the model. Both twopost materials have close-range values of aboutthe temperature and thermal stress distributions. Conclusions: Generally, zirconia postgenerated more heat and thermal stresses on thetooth structures, the other restorative materialsand the post itself.
