Abstract

Objectives: Different surgical techniquesand/or different drugs that have been used and stillbeing used in order to limit and eliminate edema, trismus and pain after surgical removal of impactedteeth. Conscious sedation is known to improve thecomfort of the patients during procedures underlocal anesthesia however its effect on postoperativecomfort of the patient is not known. The purpose ofthis study is to investigate the effect of conscioussedation on the postoperative pain and edema andcompare with surgeries performed under localanesthesia and analyze the numerical data withstatistics. Materials and Methods: Forthy systemicallyhealthy patients underwent to a surgical removal ofan impacted mandibular third molar between theages 18-36 (mean 24.4) and they were divided into2 groups. First group s operations were performedwith conscious sedation and local anesthesia(Group A). The second group s operationsperformed (Group B) only with local anesthesia.Visual Analog Scale (VAS) of pain was measuredat 6th, 12th and 24th hours and edema was measuredat 48th hour within the randomized, double-blindstudy design, Results: Edema was measured to be statisticallymore in patients that underwent the surgicalprocedures under only local anesthesia (p
