Abstract
Background and Aims: Angiogenesis is essential for both physiological and pathological processes. The aim of this study was to examine for angiogenic activity and micro-vessel density in the odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), dentigerous cysts (DC) and radicular cysts (RC), and to evaluate their biological significance. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five cases of OKCs, 10 DCs and 10 RCs were examined by immunohistochemistry for expression of two pro-angiogenic factors; vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 1 (VEGFR1), and an anti-angiogenic factor; plasminogen, as well as three endothelial markers [CD34, CD105, and von Willebrand Factor (vWF)]. Protein expression rates were scored as 0 (no staining), 1 (50% stained cells) and mean micro-vessel density (MCD) was obtained. Results: Significantly higher VEGFR1 in the lining epithelium of OKCs compared to DCs and RCs suggests that epithelial- derived VEGFR1 plays a crucial role as an angiogenesis inducer (p
