Abstract
Background and Aim: This study aimed to investigatechanges in chewing, maximum clench, swallowing and restactivities of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles byusing electromyography in partial edentulous and edentulouspatients, before treatment, day 1, then at week 1 and month 1of prosthetic rehabilitation.Materials and Method: This study was performed on 36healthy individuals who have lack of right side posteriorteeth (Group 1), lack of double-side posterior teeth (Group 2),an edentulous (Group 3) and those with natural dentition ascontrol (Group 4) (n= 9). Measurements were taken before thedelivery of prostheses (with old prosthesis in Group 3), at day 1,then at week 1 and month 1 of prosthetic rehabilitation. Datawere analyzed statistically. Results: The highest EMG values were obtained in naturaldentition. At the end of 1 month, in the unilateral and bilateralpartial edentulous groups, values were seen to be similar albeitstill lower than the ones obtained for natural dentition. Thelowest EMG values were obtained in patients with completeprosthesis. Conclusion: It can be concluded that at the end of 1 month, activation of the muscles tested approached an effectivechewing level in either partial edentulous or edentulouspatients.
