Abstract

Background and Aim: The current study identifies the relationship between serum bone turnover biomarkers and the MRONJ stage. Materials and Method: The hospital records of patients receiving antiresorptive treatment were retrospectively evaluated in Başkent University and Hacettepe University. The patients were divided in to two groups as MRONJ stage 1 (Group 1) and MRONJ stage 2 (Group 2). Vitamin D (25 OHD), calcium, thyroid stimulating hormone, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus and CRP levels were collected. The relationship between demographic, clinical and laboratory data and MRONJ stage was evaluated. Results: Group 1 consists of 24 and Group 2 consists of 18 patients. Stage 2 MRONJ is found to be more frequent in female patients. (p=0.014) Osteoporosis is the main indication for bisphosphonate therapy. 25-OHD level was significantly lower in Group 1. (p=0.016) The other biomarkers were not distinctive. Conclusion: Female gender, antiresorptive drug type, parenteral administration of the drug and the administration frequency seem to be affecting the severity of the MRONJ. However, serum biomarkers are unreliable predictors for determining the MRONJ stage.
