Abstract

The Caucasus is a region that has attracted meticulous attention of the Western researchers especially from 19th Century. A predominantly mountainous terrain unsuitable for living, an impressive ethnic and cultural variety, tens of diverse languages, and passion for freedom are the most outstanding characteristics of the Caucasus and the Caucasian peoples. Based on the data and experiences acquired through observations, explorations, research and interviews in place besides literature survey, this paper at first takes an ethnic and linguistic picture of the Caucasus, uncovering some unknown features of the ethnic and cultural structure of the region. The paper investigates the reasons for cultural destruction carried out during the Soviet period in general on the basis of Soviet man and, it then makes an analysis of the socio-cultural destruction experienced in the Caucasus, providing examples of assimilation and massacre policies executed on the Caucasian peoples. The work concludes that cultural and religious values can in no way be wiped out by oppression and violence, that any difference is a richness and variety that should be maintained in the human family as long as they don’t turn to violence, and there is a benefit for the regional powers of the Caucasus in particular in developing the mutual relationships in all fields without neglecting each other.
